ONALASKA — The Loggers got hot from the 3-point line and there wasn’t anything Wahkiakum could do about it as Onalaska downed the Mules, 66-21, in Central 2B League action here on Saturday.
The Logger sharpshooters, led by Matt Swett’s 23 points, were 14 of 24 from behind the arc.
“It was just one after another,” Onalaska coach Dennis Bower said. “I wish we could have had that against Toutle Lake. When shots go in it sure makes everything else easier, like defense and rebounding.”
It was Onalaska’s highest point total of the season, as the Loggers jumped out to a 23-4 lead in the first quarter and had a 41-8 advantage at halftime.
Swett finished the game shooting 5 of 7 from 3-point land. Trenton Neilson added 18 points on 5 of 8 shooting while Stone Whitney had 8 points and nine rebounds.
“Wahkiakum had a box-and-one on Trenton — which we’ve seen a lot this season — so it was refreshing to see the other kids get open looks and knock those down,” Bower said. “It puts tremendous pressure on the defense and Trenton still got hot despite the box-and-one. It was by far our best shooting night.”
The Loggers finished with 52 percent shooting while Wahkiakum languished from the field and hit just 15 percent of their shots.
The Loggers (6-12, 5-11 league) are currently tied with Toutle Lake for seventh and eighth place with two games to go in the league schedule. They’ll host Pe Ell for senior night on Wednesday.
“Hopefully the basket can open up for us in these last couple of games,” Bower said. “That’s kind of been our achilles heel this season. Defensively we’ve been okay but it’s always been about being able to put up points. We beat Wahkiakum 38-30 down there so I was expecting another one down to the wire, but getting a big lead and getting a lot of kids in, that was just what the doctor ordered for us.”
