CC Women: Lady Blazers Blast Pierce, 83-41

Pierce College at Centralia College Women's Basketball (Feb. 4)The Lady Blazers, as they’ve been throughout the season, were balanced and effective Wednesday night.

Centralia had seven players score at least 7 points, blowing out Pierce 83-41 in NWAC West Region women’s basketball action at Michael Smith Gymnasium in the Hub City.

“Our kids played really well tonight, obviously,” Centralia coach Shane Schutz said. “I just think we’re getting better and better at the right time.”

The win boosts the Blazers to 20-3 on the year and 9-1 in league play with six games left in the regular season, including three straight wins of at least 30 points since a Jan. 24 loss at Lower Columbia — the team’s only loss to an NWAC team.

“I’m just really proud of the effort of our kids, and the focus,” Schutz said. “You can tell, after the loss at LC, we’re just a more focused group, and it showed tonight.”

Jamika Parker led the way for Centralia, scoring 19 points on 9 of 12 shooting with seven rebounds in just under 18 minutes of action. Salena Taylor came off the bench to add 15 points — going 7 of 9 from the field — with 10 boards, and Miranda McDonald added 10 points on 5 of 9 shooting off the bench.

Centralia led 45-20 at halftime, keeping its foot on the pedal throughout to stretch the lead to its largest margin at the final buzzer.

The Blazers forced 22 turnovers, turning those Raider miscues into 19 points, and held Pierce to 13 of 62 (21 percent) shooting on the night.

Kyahri Adams added 9 points, with nine assists and five rebounds, and Courtney Kaupu kicked in 9 points with five rebounds. Susan Kenney contributed 8 points and Molly McIntyre scored 7, while the Blazers outrebounded their opponents 56-36.

Sheena Coers led Pierce with 13 points.

Centralia will face Grays Harbor on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Aberdeen High School, in a game that was originally scheduled for Saturday.
